Uti wa mgongo ulio wazi( Spinal bifida) ni hali ambayo mtoto anazaliwa nayo huku uti wa mgongo (mishipa ya fahamu mkubwa unaotoka kwenye ubongo) ukiwa wazi kutokana na mifupa (vipingili vya uti wa mgongo) kutokufunga vizuri.
Mgongo wazi(spinal bifida) inaweza pata watoto 3 kati ya watoto 10000 wanaozaliwa.
Uti wa mgongo hutengenezwa mara tu baada ya mimba kutungwa, ikiwa kuna kasoro katika utengenezaji wa uti huu basi sehemu fulani ya uti wa mgongo itabaki bila kuzibwa.
Kuna sababu mbalimbali zinapelekea uti wa mgongo kutoziba, ambazo zinaweza zuhilika, nazo ni Upungufu wa folic acid(vit B9) na vitamin B12 katika kipindi cha ujauzito, katika kipindi cha miezi ya awali.
